HAMILTON, IA — Two men died Wednesday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash in Hamilton County on Highway 20, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The crash involved a pickup traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes and another pickup heading west.
Authorities said the wreck happened around noon and remains under investigation.
How the crash happened
The State Patrol says 69-year-old Joseph Kennedy of Alden was driving a 2017 Chevy Silverado eastbound in the westbound lane of Highway 20. At the same time, 40-year-old Aaron Scott Gomez of Harlingen, Texas, was driving a 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 westbound.
The Silverado struck Gomez’s truck in the inside lane of Highway 20.
Victims identified by troopers
Kennedy was pronounced dead at the scene. Gomez was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Iowa State Patrol identified both men in its update on the crash.
Officials assisting at scene
The Iowa State Patrol was helped at the scene by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Webster City Fire Department and EMS, and Tony’s Towing. Those agencies responded as crews worked the crash site.
Investigation continues
Troopers have not released any additional details about what caused the pickup to be in the wrong lane. The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
