AUSTIN, MN — A 21-year-old Rochester man died early Thursday after the car he was driving struck a concrete bridge support in Austin. Police said the crash happened around 3:18 a.m. at East Oakland Avenue and 10th Street Southeast, and the driver was alone in the vehicle.
How the crash happened
Officers found a silver Ford Fusion that had hit the center concrete support of an overhead bridge. Investigators believe the car was traveling at a very high speed before the impact.
Police said they found no signs of braking or any other attempt to avoid the collision.
Driver identified by police
Authorities identified the driver as William Jolan Wyche using a Florida driver’s license. Police said his last known address was in Rochester.
Emergency crews responded
Austin Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance assisted at the scene. The Minnesota State Patrol is helping with the investigation.
Road closure and next steps
Police also said Oakland Place Southeast was closed for a time between 10th Street and 11th Street Southeast and was expected to affect the morning commute. Officials later said the road reopened, and they said more information would be released at a later time.
