DETROIT, MI — One person died Saturday night after a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash on westbound Interstate 94 in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police. Troopers said the wreck happened near Brush Street around 10:54 p.m. after several vehicles were traveling at high speed.
Officials have not released the age of the person who died, and they have not said whether anyone else was injured in the crash.
Speed Cited In Crash
Michigan State Police said the fatal collision is still being investigated, but investigators pointed to excessive speed as a major factor. In a statement, the agency said speeding cuts down reaction time and can make crashes far more severe.
The crash closed in around westbound traffic on I-94 as the night went on, adding to an already difficult stretch for drivers in the area.
Separate Motorcycle Wreck
Troopers also are looking into a second crash nearby on I-94 involving multiple motorcycles. They said traffic had slowed near I-74 because of the earlier fatal wreck when three motorcycles collided.
Witnesses told investigators the motorcycles were moving at a high rate of speed before that crash.
Two Riders Taken To Hospital
Two of the motorcycle riders were taken to an area hospital, and one was listed in critical condition. Michigan State Police did not immediately release further details about the riders’ injuries.
Both crashes remain under investigation as troopers work to piece together what happened on the busy stretch of freeway.
Safety Warning On Freeways
State police used the fatal crash as another reminder of how quickly speed can turn dangerous on the road. They said drivers and riders alike should take the conditions seriously and leave themselves enough time to slow down and react.
For investigators, the two collisions on the same night point to the same concern: too much speed on a crowded freeway can leave little room for mistakes.
