ALAMO TOWNSHIP, MI — A 55-year-old man died Friday morning in a three-vehicle crash on southbound US-131 in Kalamazoo County, according to Michigan State Police. The wreck happened just before 9:45 a.m. near the business loop interchange and involved a semi-truck, a Chevrolet Express utility van and a roll-off truck pulling a flatbed trailer.
How the crash unfolded
Troopers said the roll-off truck was traveling in the left lane when the utility van struck it from behind. The force of that impact sent the van into the right lane, where it hit the semi.
Police identified the driver who died as a Big Rapids man. The drivers of the other two vehicles were not hurt.
Safety details from troopers
Investigators said all three drivers were wearing seat belts. They also said they do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
Those findings are part of the early work in the case, but troopers have not said what caused the initial rear-end collision.
Highway closed for hours
Southbound US-131 was shut down at the D Avenue exit for about five hours while crews responded, investigated and cleared the scene. Traffic disruptions stretched through much of the late morning and early afternoon.
The crash happened on a busy stretch of highway in southern Kalamazoo County, where motorists often move through the business loop area at highway speed.
Investigation continues
The Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post is still investigating the crash. Officials have not released any additional details about the vehicles or the sequence of events beyond what troopers described Friday.
For now, the case remains open as investigators continue reviewing the wreck and its circumstances.
